Oskarshamn

Oskarshamn is a town in the Swedish province of Kalmar County, the historical province of Småland. The city on the Baltic coast, is the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

1646 was the fishing village Döderhultsvik of Queen Christina I. the status of a market town. As the place in 1856 was awarded city status, was also a name change to Oskarshamn. At this time reigned in Sweden King Oscar I and the city, which then had about 2,200 inhabitants, got its name. In earlier times there were in Oskarshamn many yards; but the majority of them is now closed. In the vicinity there were many quarries and so many residents were active in this area.

Economy and Transport

The port of Oskarshamn has both national and international significance. The ferry to Gotland, metal processing companies such as Scania are important economic factors. In the summer there is another ferry to the island of Blue Maiden, which is visible from the city.

The station Oskarshamn is operated since December 2011 again from passenger trains in the direction of Berga and Nässjö.

Nuclear Engineering

The Oskarshamn nuclear power plant is located near the village. In addition to the power plant since 1985 there is the nuclear interim storage Clab ( Centralt mellanlager promote använt kärnbränsle ) (Central warehouse storage for used nuclear fuel ). It is the central storage warehouse for the nuclear waste from all Swedish nuclear power plants. The waste will be stored there for 30 to 40 years. Culture

The Döderhultarmuseum shows over 200 wooden sculptures of the sculptor Axel Petersson, who is known to many only by the nickname Döderhultarn. Cityscape

Most houses were built in the 19th century in connection with the construction of the railway line from Nässjö to Oskarshamn. With the expansion of the port and the town grew. The city was built on a cliff far above the harbor. The area right on the harbor, the so-called Fnyket is built of small wooden houses. This area is now a cultural monument and the narrow alleys in the Fnyket often end at stairs.
