Osmaniye is a Turkish city in the Mediterranean region and has 189 112 inhabitants ( census 2008). It is the provincial capital of the province of Osmaniye.

History

Osmaniye was founded in 1866. The establishment served the settlement of insurgent tribes, who had risen in the uprising from Gavur Dagi. The name is derived from the Osmaniye home Osman.

After the end of World War II, the city, like almost all of southeastern Turkey today, was occupied in accordance with the Treaty of Sèvres of French troops. This occupation lasted until 1922. During this time, the local population rebelled against the occupation. On January 7, 1922, freed the city from the French occupation, therefore several buildings, streets and squares are devoted to this date.

The city and district of Osmaniye have with the football club Osmaniyespor since the 1940s, a football team in the 1980s mainly in the third highest Turkish league, now the second TFF Lig, represented the region. His most successful period the club had in the years 1984-1987, in which the club for two seasons in the second highest Turkish league, today TFF 1 Lig played. In summer 2007, the club was relegated from the fourth division and lowest Turkish professional league, the third TFF Lig, from plays and since then in the regional amateur league, which in turn corresponds to the fifth highest in the Turkish league.
