Osorno is a city located on the Panamerican Highway in southern Chile. It counts 160 475 inhabitants (as of 2009).

The German and Swiss influence is not to be overlooked, for example, the German newspaper " Condor " is sold in Osorno.

Climate and geography

Osorno is (los Lagos Región de ) Chile at the confluence of the Río Damas, and the river Rahue in the region X, about 100 kilometers north of the regional capital Puerto Montt. The city is located in the center of the province of Osorno, consisting of a total of seven municipalities: Osorno, San Juan de la Costa, San Pablo, Puerto Octay, Puyehue, Río Negro and Purranque.

The area - which is sometimes also called the Chilean Switzerland - has many lakes and volcanoes, one of the most beautiful of all is the picturesque volcano Osorno with its very uniform cone.

The climate is temperate - cool. In summer the temperature averages around 15 degrees Celsius, the winter is relatively rainy ( fall from June to August average of about 186.6 mm, and the annual average is 110.96 mm), with an average temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius.

History

Osorno was founded in 1558 by Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza. In the period between 1603-1788 the city was in ruins, however, after it had been in the Arauco War, that the arguments with the Mapuche Indians resident in the south of Chile, destroyed.

The immemorial Huilliche populated region of Osorno was in the 19th century, forcibly joined the Chilean State and settled in 1850 on schedule with European immigrants. In particular, German -speaking colonists shaped the region significantly. A German church was built. The population in 1875 was 1895 people, mostly German. The " Instituto Alemán de Osorno " ( German school Osorno ) celebrated its one hundred and fifty years of existence in March 2004.

Attractions

Osornos surrounding area is popular with trekking trailers.

In the National Park Vicente Pérez Rosales is located about 80 km southeast of the city of the same name Volcán Osorno also.

Economy

Osorno is the main center of the southern Chilean dairy and agriculture and has the largest Feria de Ganado - the cattle trade in Chile. In the city there are two universities: the Universidad de Los Lagos State and the private Universidad San Sebastian.
