Oste-Hamme Canal

The course of the Oste- Hamme- channel

The Oste- Hamme- Oste- Hamme- channel or channel is a channel in northern Germany, which connects the Oste with the Hamme. He goes from the Oste at Spreckens four kilometers above Bremervörde from and passes through the former Teufelsmoor and Gnarrenburg until it reaches the Hamme in cattle Specken. The area of the channel near the mouth of the Hamme is also called Kollbeck.

History

The canal was built from 1769 to 1790 by Jürgen Christian Findorff and served the drainage of the devil Moors and the freight traffic (mainly peat towards Bremen and Hamburg) with small boats ( bulls). The long construction period stemmed from the difficulties that caused the soft peat soil, the nachrutschte again and again and again digging necessitated. From the 1860s, numerous folding ropes and double locks were installed, which facilitated the Torfschifffahrt.

Importance as a transport route

The channel formed initially the only inland waterway connection between the Elbe and Weser. It is 19 kilometers long, had a sole width of four meters and a water level width of six meters. The draft was 0.9 meters. Today, the canal is overgrown and no longer passable. Through the restoration of the statue folding water hike is at best possible.
