Osteel

Osteel is a municipality in the district of Aurich in Lower Saxony in Brookmerland. The town is located north of the center Samtgemeinde Marienhafe, with which it is grown structurally. To Osteel also belongs to the district Schoonorth, about three kilometers west of the Old Post path.

The village consists mainly of pure residential area is drawn along a length of about three kilometers at the old post with several side streets. Sector is represented by a bakery, electrical goods shops, a flower shop, post office, two restaurants, a construction business, building management and agricultural machinery trade. Furthermore, there are also two used car dealers. The educational program within the community includes an elementary school and a kindergarten.

History

The village is Osteel after 1164, as the coastal region was devastated by the Julianenflut, have been founded. The early settlement was on the edge of a raised bog.

The Council of the Municipality Osteel Council consists of 13 women and councilors. This is the set number for the member community of integrated municipality with a population of 2,001 to 3,000 inhabitants. The 13 council members are elected through local elections for five years. The current term of office began on 1 November 2011.

The turnout in the local elections of 2011 was 49.88 % below the Lower Saxony average of 52.5 %. For comparison - in the previous local elections on 10 September 2006, the turnout was 55.04 %.

Attractions

An attraction of the village is Warnfried church from the 12th century. The church has a length of 63 meters and is consecrated to St. Werenfried. The organ of the church is the second oldest in East Friesland. It was built in 1619 by master Edo Evers.

Outside the church is a monument of the astronomer David Fabricius, who was pastor of the church in the early 17th century. From him not only stars were discovered, but also marked one of the first maps of East Frisia. His son John discovered sunspots.

Traffic

The main village is located approximately six kilometers south Osteel the old county town north on the main road 72. Through the community also runs the railway line between Emden and north dike Mole. After the closure of the station in 1978, the next station is now in three kilometers south Marienhafe. To the west of the county ( district Schoonorth ) also runs the national road 4 of Pewsum north.
