Ostenholz Moor

The Ostenholzer Moor named after the village of East Wood near Meißendorf in the Lüneburg Heath in Lower Saxony, is a peat bog. The moor is used almost exclusively as a Bundeswehr training area. Here it is closed to the public and able to develop largely natural as a result. The military training area adjacent to mountains immediately to the north. The river separates the Meiße Ostenholzer Moor from nature and bird reserve Meißendorf Lakes / Bannetzer Moor.

The landscape of the bog forms a natural border zone for the actual nature reserve, which was acquired by the district of Celle. The Meißendorfer ponds, originally applied to fish farming, today represent the most important service areas and breeding areas for many marsh and water birds in Lower Saxony dar. can find these here around 250, some rare and protected bird species. They include, among others, the black stork and the osprey. The wiedervernässte part of the moor has become a major resting and sleeping place of the cranes. 2008 here 600 latching cranes were counted.
