Osteoblastoma

Osteoblastomas is in a group of primary bone tumors. These emanating from the osteoblastogenesis is always benign. Morphologically it is very similar to osteoid osteoma.

Pathology

Osteoblastomas occurs mainly in the spine and long bones. Its peak age is between the 10th - 20th Age, with boys being affected twice as often as girls.

Morphology

In radiological scans reveals a central radiolucent area ( nidus ), which in contrast to osteoid osteoma has a diameter of more than 2 cm. To the nidus is usually no sclerosis. Histologically, osteoblastoma from osteoid trabeculae with wide osteoblasts and osteoclasts numerous capillaries.

Diagnosis

The diagnosis can be made radiographically ( frequent localization in the spine (40 %) ). Osteoblastomas leads in contrast to osteoid osteoma rather less night pain.

Therapy

The therapy consists either in a complete removal ( curettage ) or partial removal ( segmental ) of the bone.

Forecast

The prognosis is very favorable. Even if the entire tumor is removed, it can definitely be expected to healing.
