Ostermundigen ( bern German Oschtermundige or Mundige ) is a municipality in the Bern-Mittelland administrative district in the canton of Bern in Switzerland.

Geography

Ostermundigen is a municipality in the Bern agglomeration and is located east of Bern at the foot of Mount Ostermundigen.

History

Ostermundigen is only since the elimination of Bolligen in 1983 a separate municipality, before it was only a so-called district municipality of Bolligen. The former wooden church was a typical suburban community with a diverse portfolio over the past decades.

Since 1979 Ostermundigen is twinned with Lohnberg an der Lahn, Germany.

The council is the executive Ostermundigens. He is one of nine members. With the exception of the mayor Thomas Iten (independent, Booth 2013), the municipal councils are working part-time. The municipal council is elected every four years by proportional system ( the same time as the Great council ). The mayor is elected in Majorzverfahren.

The Big council is the legislative branch Ostermundigens. It comprises 40 members and is elected every four years by proportional system. Since the elections of 2012, the municipal council is composed of the 13-member SP / Green / Union Group, 11 representatives of the SVP, four representatives each from the Liberals and the EPP, the Green Liberals and the FORUM of nonparty each provide three parliamentarians and two representatives the CVP. In Ostermundigen SMEs are mostly settled. The largest companies are domiciled in the municipality Intersport and Emmi. Since 2004, Swiss Post operates a distribution center in Ostermundigen. In addition to these companies known companies such as the Friedrich Sport AG or the cable manufacturer " Kablan " in Ostermundigen also operate.

Traffic

The first connection to the public transport was Ostermundigen with the railway line Bern -Thun already 1859. 1924 it was connected to the network of the City of Bern transport.

Culturally Ostermundigen is strongly oriented towards the neighboring town of Bern. Ostermundigen has a well-developed primary education system with four school centers ( Bern Street, Dennigkofen, Mösli and Ruti ).

In the sand quarries Ostermundigens sandstones were for centuries broken that were used in the city of Bern as building fabric. Notably also the Berner Münster was built in large part of Ostermundigen sandstone. Even parts of the Cologne Cathedral were made with Ostermundigen sandstone.

The cultural life Ostermundigens is largely determined by its numerous clubs.
