Östhammar

Östhammar is a place ( tätort ) in the Swedish province of Uppsala County and the historic province of Uppland. The place is also the capital of the municipality of the same name.

History

The town is traditionally referred to as a city, but the name by the local government reform of 1971 abolished nationwide. Östhammar was first mentioned in 1368, when Albrecht of Mecklenburg of the city ausfertigte privileges. However Östhammar was a well-attended venue in earlier times. The privileges went in 1491 to the neighboring Öregrund lost, but Östhammar she received back in 1539. In 1651 the town was granted a town hall and 1663 were the inhabitants of the government to build the permission of a church.
