Ostia (Rome)

Lido di Ostia ( Ostia Lido or Lido also di Roma) is a suburb of Rome, located on the Tiber River and the Tyrrhenian Sea. He belongs to the XIII Municipality Ostia.

Location

Lido di Ostia is located about 28 km south-west of the Roman city center on the Tyrrhenian Sea. To the north is the mouth of the Tiber, and forms the boundary to the town of Fiumicino. In the south, the Asked preserved nature park of Castel Fusano and to the east is about 3 km from the Tiber, the ancient city and archaeological site of Ostia Antica

History

In antiquity, the present-day beach was still two miles off the coast of the sea; then today located inland ancient Ostia was still on the water. Today's coastline was only by siltation due to Tiberanschwemmungen. In the 19th century, it served Saline and swampy terrain.

1883, day laborers settled from Romagna and started the reclamation. 1908, the foundation was officially approved as a seaside suburb of Rome and joined Mussolini in 1927 by the construction of the Via del Mare, the first motorway in Italy, with the capital.

After the Second World War, several bathing facilities were built along the coast and Ostia became a popular destination for tourists. By entering water pollution in the 70s, however, the popularity of the resort fell.

Since 1956 Lido di Ostia was a popular place for airport staff of the then new airport Rome Fiumicino Airport in Fiumicino. 1976 Ostia was part of the XIII Municipality of Rome.

Infrastructure

The main public transport hub in Lido di Ostia is the Roma- Lido, which connects Ostia Rome and transported over 90,000 passengers per day. Stops in the Lido Ostia Lido Nord, Ostia Lido Centro. In rush hour the route comes up to 12 trips per hour.

In addition, the Via del Mare ( SS8 ) highway connects the suburb with Rome.
