Geography

For the district belonged to the western part of the Baltic Sea island of Usedom (the eastern part belongs to Poland). Neighboring districts were in the southeastern district of Uecker -Randow, south of the district of Mecklenburg -Strelitz and in the west the counties of Pomerania and North Western Pomerania. The Hanseatic city of Greifswald sticking out from the Baltic Sea to the north in the district area.

The landscape is dominated by moraines, bogs ( Peenetalmoor, Ziesebruch, Thurbruch ) and in particular the coastal location on the Baltic Sea, Bodden waters ( Bay of Greifswald, Peenestrom Krumminer Wiek, backwaters ) and the Szczecin Lagoon. The most important river is the Peene.

History

The Mecklenburg Western Pomerania was taken at the district reform in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern June 12, 1994 by the union of the previous circles Anklam, Greifswald and Wolgast.

For an administrative reform and thereby intended creation of new large circles in Mecklenburg- Vorpommern 2009, the considerations of the state government initially went there to let the county as a whole merged into a new "County Südvorpommern ". After the judgment of the district Constitutional Court of 26 July 2007, the original reform law than with the country's constitution was incompatible not be implemented.

As part of a new county government reform in 2011, the Mecklenburg Western Pomerania eventually became part of the new district Vorpommern - Greifswald with the county town of Greifswald.
