Ota Zaremba

Ota Zaremba ( born April 22, 1957 in Opava) is a former Czechoslovak weightlifter and Olympic champion.

Sporting career

Zaremba's international career began with his participation in the World Championships in 1979 in Thessaloniki. Here he was able to realize in a duel in the first heavy weight up to 100 kg 370.0 kg ( 172.5 / 197.5 kg ). This meant silver in the snatch, and the fourth place in the duel. First was Pawel Sirchin with 385.0 kg.

At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, Zaremba increased significantly and reached 395.0 kg ( 180.0 / 215.0 kg ) in single combat. After his third attempt in the snatch with valid 180.0 kg, Zaremba be tried in the fourth, held out of competition test of a new world record of 183.5 kg, but failed. In thrusting he could make valid all three attempts with 205.0 kg, 210.0 kg and 215.0 kg. The runner-up Igor Nikitin lifted a total of 392.5 kg ( 177.5 / 215.0 kg ). In the last test Nikitin failed to 220.0 kg in pushing, which would have meant gold. Since the Olympic Games in 1980 at the same time represented the World Championships this year, Zaremba won at the same time his only world title in a duel, as well as in the snatch. In thrusting he became vice world champion.

Zaremba's last World Cup was in 1981 in Lille. Here, however, he was able to bring valid experiments in any of the two disciplines.

Despite its relatively short international career, succeeded Zaremba set up three world records in 1981. With 185.5 kg and 187.5 kg, he twice broke the record in the snatch and 415.0 kg and the duel world record.

Others

  • Zaremba accused the sports officials of the former Czechoslovakia of systematic doping. He thereby confirmed the use of anabolic steroids in the period from 1979 until 1984. Nowadays he is unable to work and lives on his pension.
  • In July 2010, Ota Zaremba drew attention to himself when he expelled all members of the Roma from his weightlifting club after a theft.
