Otavi (the name comes from the name of a nearby spring, the word itself comes from the Ovambo: " tava " what the movements of a newborn at birth describes ) is a city in the Otjozondjupa Region in Namibia. In 2011, the city had a population of around 5200 inhabitants.

The city lies along with Grootfontein and Tsumeb in the Otavi triangle (also called " maize triangle" ), an agriculturally intensively used area with high rainfall figures. The city is a transportation hub in Namibia: here take the National Road B1, B8 national road ( part of the Trans - Caprivi Highway) and the main road C39 together. Three kilometers outside of Otavi is the Khorab Peace Memorial ( Memorial Khorab ) which was built to commemorate the surrender of the German colonial force of South West Africa on 9 July 1915.

History

The former railroad town Otavi is also namesake of today based in Neuss am Rhein " Otavi Minerals GmbH": 1900, incorporated as a " Otavi Mining and Railway Company " based in Berlin for the sole purpose of building a railroad to Tsumeb and exploitation of the California copper deposits. The Otavi Minerals GmbH is part of the Greek S & B Group and responsible for the Perlitgeschäft in this. More standing in the removal mines in the region are for example the location east of Otavi Kombat Mine and the Tsumeb West Mine and the Flussspatbergwerk Okorusu of Solvay SA

In the 2010 local elections the following official result was determined.

Status

2004, the status of Otavi was changed from the one city in a village after it had this since 1998 due to the difficult financial considerations. Otavi 2011 but was again proclaimed a city.

Education

In Otavi is the "German private school Otavi " the smallest German -speaking school in Namibia. In their study 18 students.
