Otfried Höffe

Otfried Hoffe ( born September 12, 1943 in Leobschutz, Upper Silesia ) is a German philosopher who is known especially for his work on the ethics of Aristotle and Immanuel Kant.

Life

Höffe studied from 1964 to 1970 philosophy, history, theology and sociology in Münster, Tübingen, Saarbrücken and Munich. In his dissertation of 1971 ( Practical Philosophy - The model of Aristotle ), he showed that the concept of striving for the ethics of Aristotle is fundamental. In the years 1970 and 1971 he was Visiting Scholar at Columbia University. In 1974 he qualified as a professor in Munich with the work strategies of humanity. On the ethics of public decision-making processes. In 1976 he became a full professor of philosophy at the University of Duisburg. From 1978 to 1992 he was Professor of Ethics and Social Philosophy and Director of the International Institute of Social Philosophy and Politics in Fribourg. At the same time he had from 1978 to 1990 a lectureship in philosophy of law at the Law Faculty of the University of Fribourg. With a lectureship in social ethics he taught from 1986 to 1998 at the ETH Zurich. From 1992 until his retirement in September 2011, he read as a professor of philosophy at the University of Tübingen, where he 1994, the Research Center for Political Philosophy founded and co-opted member of the law school was. In 2002 he received the Bavarian Prize for Literature (Karl Vossler price) for scientific illustrations of literary merit and has since also a regular guest professor of Philosophy of Law at the University of St. Gallen. He is the author of numerous books esp. on ethics, legal, political and economic philosophy, and Kant and Aristotle and is a full member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and a member of the National Academy of Sciences ( Leopoldina ). His book on "Political Justice" has been translated into ten languages. Höffe has dealt intensively with John Rawls, whose theory of justice he made known in Germany in the 70s. On 1 June 2009 he was president of the National Ethics Committee in the area of ​​Switzerland in human medicine.
