Otradnoye, Kirovsky District, Leningrad Oblast

Otradnoje (Russian Отрадное ) is a city in the northwestern Russian Leningrad Oblast. She has ( as of October 14, 2010 ) 23,866 inhabitants.

Geography

The city is located in the Newaniederung about 40 km east of Saint Petersburg Oblasthauptstadt on the left bank of the Neva.

Otradnoje belongs to Rajon Kirovsk.

History

A village Ivanovskaya (later also in the form Ivanovskoe ) at the mouth of the Neva River in Tosna was first mentioned in documents in 1708. In the mid-19th century the entrepreneur Savva Yakovlev had built a copper rolling mill here, after which the place temporarily got the official name Mednoe (from russian med for copper).

1784 acquired the Empress Catherine II in the vicinity of the village of a country estate and named it Pella, after the ancient capital of Macedonia Pella, birthplace of Alexander the Great, probably in reference to their grandchildren and later Tsar Alexander I in 1785 was the construction of a palace started, which was not completed. Under Paul I. The building was demolished; only outbuildings ( stables and Posthof ) survived until the Second World War. Later it was a cottage settlement with the common name Otradnoje (of Russian otrada, somewhat pathetic for enjoyment, refreshment ). This designation was given this place in 1940 the status of an urban-type settlement.

During the Second World War, both places were during the Leningrad blockade almost 900 days in the front line east of Leningrad from the south reached the Neva River in this area, and were completely destroyed.

1970 both settlements and the village of Ust- Tosno were combined and received city rights as Otradnoe.

Economy and infrastructure

In Otradnoje there is a river ship and shipyard ( Pella mach ), a plastic factory and a plant for electricity pylons.

The city is located on this section of railway line opened in 1906 Saint Petersburg- Volkhov Vologda and Kirov - Murmansk ( kilometer 36; station name Pella, in memory of the Palace of Catherine II ).

By Otradnoje leads the regional road which connects the north M10 highway Tosno Nikolskoje on the highway M18 in Kirovsk.
