Onomastics

Its name comes from the Slavic and means as much as Father.

Location and landscape

Due to its isolated position of the mountain is visible from 100 km away. From the north it appears to be solid and wide, from the West and East in particular but you can see its narrow side. The limestone massif is around intersected by deep valleys and gorges, so that it is accessible only from the north-west. Therefore, only two major cities within 20 km: the district capital Scheibbs the north and Mariazell in the southeast.

Boundary and summit of Ötschergebiets

In a broader sense comprises the Ötscher, locally also called Ötscherland, the mountains between Neubruck at Scheibbs, Lunz am See and Mariazell. The precise boundary follows the mountain range outline for the Austrian cave Directory of Trimmel where the Oetscher has the number 1816, as follows:

  • And the mountains north of Erlauf up to the Jeßnitzbach and the area around Puchenstube is still part of the nature park, but are generally considered to be Türnitzer Alps. These are especially Hochreith Spitz ( 835 m above sea level. A. ) and Haiger Kogel (855 m above sea level. A. ) above Grafenmühl at the Erlauf in the West, Turmkogel ( 1130 m above sea level. Caves and on the next Oetscher

The best known are Ötscherhöhlen the money hole, the pigeon hole and the Pfannloch directly next or at Rauen comb and about five kilometers northerly from Ötscher Oetscher stalactite cave.

Nature and Tourism

The Tormäuer and Ötschergräben represent a system of canyons that surrounds the mountain range from three sides. In this " Grand Canyon of Lower Austria" flow the tributaries of the main river and even Erlauf - 1500 meters below the summit - to the east, then north and west. Therefore, it is also the eastern ridge of the Ötscher, the Rough Ridge, the steepest (difficulty I).

Lackenhof am Oetscher (810 m ) is considered the most famous resort of the Ötscher country. From the local end of a double - chair lift for Ötscherschutzhaus that something lies at 1410 meters altitude below the Westgrates. Here the main trail to the summit, which is known for its good outlook.
