Ottilie Roederstein

Ottilie Wilhelmine Roeder Stone ( born April 22, 1859 in Zurich, † November 26, 1937 in Hofheim am Taunus) was a German -Swiss painter. She was the girlfriend Elizabeth Winterhalter, the first German surgeon.

Life

Roeder Stone was born as the second daughter of the Zurich-based businessman Reinhard Roeder Stein and his wife Alwina Roeder stone. The Roeder stone came from the Rhineland. They were moved to Zurich in 1857, as Reinhard Roederstein there took over the representation of Barmer textile company.

By now forgotten Swiss painter Eduard Pfyffer (1836-1899), who painted 1869/1869 family portraits, and joint visits with parents in Munich museums Roederstein felt early on attracted to painting. Training as a painter, however, seemed not possible due to the social conventions of the time in terms of female vocational training for Roeder stone. In particular, the mother defied the wishes of the daughter so that Roeder stone had to deliver his own words " heavy fighting " until the father finally agreed to an education. Roeder stone was added to Pfyffer studio in Zurich in 1876, so they could remain under the parental care.

The budding painter made ​​fast progress in their education, particularly their ability as a portrait painter was soon. Since the possibilities of their training workshops for Roeder stone soon became inadequate, she was looking for training in other locations. The marriage with the Berlin businessman Voos her sister Johanna was Roederstein the opportunity to live in the nurses' home. The end of 1879 they entered the studio of the famous ladies at this time in Berlin painter Karl Gussow one ( 1843-1907 ). Anni Hopf moved to Paris in 1882. Roeder, Stein received permission from their parents to also change there, there to undergo further training, so they could not get in Berlin. This offered her the opportunity to break away from the family bond. By the end of her time in Paris in 1887 Roeder stone managed to earn their living by commissions and the sale of their images and to become financially independent from their parents.
