Otto's encyclopedia

Ottův Dictionary naučný ( Otto's encyclopedia ), also Ottova encyklopedie ( Otto's encyclopedia ), is a 28 -volume encyclopedia from the years 1888-1909 Czech with nearly 186,000 keywords, released on 29,000 pages. It is regarded as one of the foundation stones of Czech culture and identity.

History

The bookseller January Otto (1841-1916) and Jakub Maly ( then editor of the lexicon Riegrův Dictionary, named after Franz Rieger Ladislaus ) devised in 1884 a plan for a Czech National Encyclopedia, which should surpass the outdated Riegrův Dictionary.

Maly died in 1885, and one of the first major authors, Tomáš G. Masaryk ( the future president of Czechoslovakia ), became his successor as editor in chief. He was responsible for the selection of staff and determined the extent of the work, Otto took care of all financial matters. After Masaryk ( Koniginhof handwriting and green Berger handwriting) had become a controversial public figure in a sensational controversy over the authenticity of two supposedly medieval manuscripts, he retired in 1887 from the editorship of the Encyclopedia back, and Prof. Kořán became his successor. During this time, nearly 60 people were working in the newsroom.

In January 1888, the first volume of the Dictionary appeared Ottův naučný in bookstores. He mostly contained the former editorial material. In subsequent years, the other 26 volumes were published ( a total of 27 volumes with 27,789 pages) and an additional band. 1,086 experts processed while approximately 139 418 tags, illustrated with 4,888 photos and 479 tablets.

Originally, the encyclopedia was sold in book form, later in the leather binding. On the spine is mapped id R. a seated on a throne angel in gold, there is a shining star hovering with coat of arms and a crown on its head.

1930-1943 created twelve Supplement volumes under the name Ottův Dictionary naučný nové doby ( Otto's encyclopedia of the new era ). Under chief editor Bohumil Němec came to 9,000 pages approx 59,000 predominantly new tags and 2,000 images ( 1,000 more in the Annexes ) was added. The correction of the graphics was conducted by Karel Svolinský.

Under the name Ottova encyklopedie obecných Vedomosti ( Otto's encyclopedia of general knowledge ) the whole encyclopedia was digitized in 1997-1999 and published on 4 CD -ROMs in the Portable Document Format ( PDF).
