Otto Behaghel

Wilhelm Maximilian Otto Behaghel ( May 3, 1854 in Karlsruhe, † October 9, 1936 in Munich) was a German medievalist and germanistischer professor at the universities of Heidelberg, Basel and casting.

Life

Otto Behaghel was the son of the High Church Council Behaghel Felix (1822-1888) and his wife Pauline, born Wielandt ( 1827-1901 ). He attended the preschool and grammar school in Karlsruhe and completed 1872/73 his military service in a local Baden Regiment, where he was discharged as a lieutenant of the reserve. Subsequently, he studied from 1873 to 1876 at the Universities of Heidelberg, Göttingen and Paris, with particularly Karl Bartsch exerted a significant influence on the young student.

On April 22, 1876, he received his doctorate in Heidelberg with the theme of The Modes in Heliand, an attempt in the field of syntax as a doctor of philosophy. In 1877 he completed his philosophical state exam and 1878 he qualified as a lecturer in Germanic and Romance Philology with the theme The time series of the dependent speech to the German in Heidelberg. Here he founded with Fritz Neumann 1880 Literaturblatt for Germanic and Romance Philology, associate professor in 1882 at the University of Heidelberg, on June 9, 1883 Professor of German Philology at the University of Basel and at June 30, 1888 Professor of German at the University casting.

In the course of its activities him many awards were recognition of his abilities. So he was appointed in 1897 to the secret Councilor. In 1918 he was real privy and Honorary Doctor of Law Faculty casting. In addition, in 1907 we awarded him the Commander's Cross of the second class of the Order of Zähringerplatz lions, 1932, the Honorary Medal of the city of Giessen, 1934, the Goethe Medal for Art and Sciences and the Golden Ring of the General German Language Club. Work

He made theoretical contributions to the German and Middle High German language. He formulated the laws Behaghelschen. Especially on the law of the growing elements is still frequently referred to in the current theme - rheme outline research and in quantitative linguistics.

In 1896 he was a member of the First Chamber of the Estates of the Grand Duchy of Hesse.
