Otto Edelmann

Otto Edelmann ( born February 5, 1917 in Vienna, † May 14, 2003 ) was an Austrian singer ( bass-baritone ).

In 1937, he debuted in Gera as Figaro. In 1947 he debuted as a hermit in Carl Maria von Weber's Der Freischütz at the Volksoper in Vienna, the then replacement of the bombed State Opera, and was a member of the Vienna State Opera.

Overall, he sang 36 roles in 430 performances. His best roles were the ox Lerchenau in Der Rosenkavalier and Hans Sachs in Die Meistersinger, which was his favorite role.

His big breakthrough came in 1950, when he sang his first Falstaff under Clemens Krauss. In 1951 the Hans Sachs in Bayreuth.

Great successes came in United States, especially at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, where he was a member for 18 years. Overall, it was 148 times on the stage of the MET.

At the Vienna State Opera he appeared for the last time on 15 December 1976 as Graf Waldner in Arabella.

The two sons Peter and Paul Armin Edelmann were singers.

He was buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Kalksburger Cemetery (Group 1, No 55 A) in Vienna.
