Otto Erich Deutsch

Otto Erich German ( born September 5, 1883 Vienna, † November 23, 1967, Baden bei Wien ) was an Austrian musicologist.

Life

After studying art history and literature in Vienna and at the University of Graz Otto Erich German was an assistant at the Art History Institute of the University of Vienna and librarian in the music archive of Anthony van Hoboken. Since he was exposed as a Jew of persecution by the Nazis, he and his family lived from 1939 to 1951 in exile in Cambridge, then again in Vienna.

From German comes the first complete listing of the works of Franz Schubert, the German directory (published in 1951 in English, new edition in 1978 in German language ). He has done research in addition to Schubert, Mozart and Handel in particular, is considered the "inventor" of the documentary biography and is one of the important musicologist of the 20th century.

German is buried in an honorary grave dedicated to the Vienna Central Cemetery (Group 40, No. 12 ). In Vienna Liesing the German street was named after him in 1980.
