Otto I, Count of Guelders

Otto I of funds (* 1150, † after the April 30, 1207 ) was from 1182 to 1207 Earl of funds and Zutphen.

Life

Otto was the son of Count Henry I of funds and the Agnes of Arnstein. He married around 1185 Richardis of Scheyern - Wittelsbach (* 1173, † 1231 ), daughter of Duke Otto I of Bavaria.

He took part in the crusade of his Emperor Frederick Barbarossa and distinguished himself in the conquest Ikonions particularly from. After the sudden death of the Emperor, the Crusader army and several Crusader disintegrated returned to their homeland. Otto but went on with a group to Syria and Palestine. In the Holy Land, he joined Guy of Lusignan, King of Jerusalem, at which besieged just the city of Acre. When the lossy Siege of Acre dragged on, Otto 1190 traveled back to the homeland. He is the only Dutch nobleman is attested his return from the Third Crusade living.

Otto often quarreled with the County of Holland, and was pushed back in the diocese of Utrecht. He often stood against Brabant, Limburg and allied with it came a time in captivity. He fought against the Frisians and kept most of his holdings. In the German throne war (from 1198 ) he stood on the side of Hohenstaufen.

Otto I of funds is buried in Kamp Monastery.
