Otto II Wittelsbach, Duke of Bavaria

Otto II the Illustrious ( born April 7, 1206 Kelheim, † November 29, 1253 in Landshut ) from the house of Wittelsbach was 1231-1253 Duke of Bavaria and from 1214 to 1253 Count Palatine of the Rhine.

Life

Otto was the son of Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria and Ludmilla of Bohemia, the Count Albert III of the widow. of arc. Otto was betrothed at the age of six years with Agnes of the Palatinate († 1267 ), the heiress of the County Palatine of the Rhine (later the Electoral Palatinate ). Otto's father, Ludwig had received the Palatinate in 1214 as a fief. Under his rule came areas of the dying noble families of the Counts of Bogen, the Counts of Andechs and the Ortenburgers to Bavaria. With the possessions of the Counts of Bogen 1242 came their blue and white diamond crest of Bavaria, which is part of the Bavarian coat of arms today. Otto died in 1253 and was buried in the Benedictine monastery Scheyern. A memorial plaque for him was taken in in the Walhalla near Regensburg.

Family

Duke Otto II married in May 1222 Princess Agnes ( 1201-1267 ), a daughter of Welf Henry of Brunswick and his wife Agnes Countess Palatine of the Rhine. The marriage produced five children:

  • Sophie (1236-1289) ∞ 1258 in Munich Gebhard Count VI. of Sulzbach and Hirschberg (1220-1275);
  • Agnes (1240-1306), a nun in Seligenthal.
