Otto Jaekel

Otto Max Johannes Jaekel ( born February 21, 1863 in Neusalz; † March 6, 1929 in Beijing) was a German geologist and paleontologist.

Life

Otto Jaekel studied in Legnica geology and paleontology. After graduating in 1883 he moved breslau to the Silesian Friedrich Wilhelm University and studied until 1885 when Ferdinand von Roemer. At the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich, he received his doctorate in 1886 at Karl von Zittel. From 1887 to 1889 he was assistant to Ernst Wilhelm Benecke at the Institute of Geology and Palaeontology Kaiser- Wilhelms- University of Strasbourg. In 1894 he was associate professor at the Friedrich -Wilhelms- University of Berlin and curator of the Berlin Geology and Palaeontology Museum.

In 1903 he transferred to the University of Vienna. From 1906 to 1928 he was associate professor at the University of Greifswald. After his retirement in Greifswald Otto Jaekel in 1928 took a teaching position of Sun Yat -sen University in Guangzhou. He died after a brief illness at the German Hospital ( Beijing).

His main area of ​​work were the fossil Vertebrata. 27 of his publications dealt with the Echinodermata. Jaekelopterus, a genus of sea scorpions, was named after him. The Paleontological Society was founded in 1912 on his initiative. In 1928, he became its honorary member.

Jaekel was a member of the Corps Lusatia Breslau ( 1883) and Corp. loop carrier Guestfalia of Greifswald ( 1922).
