After high school he began in Eberswalde Emperor at the Military Medical Academy in Berlin to study medicine, but soon came out on the Eastern front to the war effort and wounding. The end of 1945 he continued his studies at the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen and attended lectures in Protestant theology, philosophy, psycho- diagnostics and Egyptology. 1952-1954 Otto Kaiser was vicar in the Swabian Balingen, 1954-1958 Assistant in Tübingen. The universities of Jena, Tartu and Salzburg awarded him honorary doctorates. Kaiser was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit, First Class.

His work follows in the tradition of Rudolf Bultmann; He sees theology as " the study of human reflection on the experience of the divine in time and space ." He has written a three-volume theology of the Old Testament and also an introduction to the Old Testament, which became a standard work. Among his many areas of expertise include the Book of Job, the Ecclesiastes, Sirach and the Apocrypha. Kaiser is also considered the leading expert of ancient and modern philosophy, especially Kant, Hegel, and, most recently, of Aristotelian philosophy and Plato and Nietzsche.
