Otto Kandler

Otto Kandler ( born October 23, 1920 in Deggendorf ) is a German botanist.

Kandler in 1949 received his doctorate at the University of Munich in 1953 and habilitated there.

From 1960 to 1968 he was Director of the Bacteriological Institute of the South German Testing and Research Dairy Institute of the Technical University of Munich.

From 1968 until his retirement in 1986 he was Professor of Botany and Microbiology at the Ludwig- Maximilians- University of Munich.

Together with Carl Woese he supplemented the traditional classification of living things in eukaryotes and prokaryotes to a third form, the Archaea. Later he devoted himself to the study of forest damage.

Since 1983 he is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences. Kandler is also an honorary member of the German Botanical Society.
