Otto Keller (philologist)

Otto Keller ( born May 28, 1838 in Tübingen, † February 16, 1927 in Ludwigsburg ) was a German philologist Classic.

Life and work

Otto Keller came from a Swabian family of scholars and was the son of the philologist Adelbert von Keller, who had been knighted for his outstanding achievements.

He attended from 1856 to 1861, the universities of Tübingen and Bonn, at the latter university as a student of the philologist Friedrich Ritschl. He was then in the higher education service operates since 1866 as rector of the Lyceum Württemberg in Oehringen until he was born in 1872 professor at the University of Freiburg, where he was appointed in 1875 to Graz. Six years later - in 1881 - he was appointed professor at the German University in Prague, which he for 28 years until 1909, his age of 71, was a member.

Keller mainly dealt with Horace, so they named him to distinguish him from his father as " Horace Keller". Keller married on May 24, 1869 Leube Eugenie, daughter of the Medical Council Wilhelm Leube in Ulm, a sister of William Leubes. Sons of the couple were Sigmund Keller (1870-1943) and Wolfgang Keller (1873-1943), philologist and professor in Münster; the daughter Clothilde Schaar (1874-1958) was a sculptor.
