Otto Lenel

Otto Lenel ( born December 13, 1849 in Mannheim, † February 7, 1935 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German legal historian of Roman law. Its importance in the field of Roman law, in particular the discovery of later interpolations of the original classical texts is considered to be outstanding. In particular, he studied the reconstruction of Edictum perpetuum and Palingenesia.

Life

Lenel was the son of Moritz Lenel and Caroline born Scheuer. Beginning in 1885 in Strasbourg, he taught at the Kaiser- Wilhelm University. 1896/97 he was its rector. In 1907, he received a call from the Albert -Ludwigs- University of Freiburg. As one of the major German legal historian, best known for his research on the Roman legal history, he was honored on his 80th birthday in 1929 with a congratulatory address, in the 20 countries of different continents and 100 universities were represented.

1933 met the honorary citizen of the city of Freiburg, the effects of National Socialist racial policy; his daughter was forced out of her job as a nurse. These heavy blows broke Lenel. Over the past one and a half years of his life he could no longer devote the science itself. On February 7, 1935, he died and was buried in the family grave in the main cemetery of Freiburg im Breisgau.

His wish, he was buried according to quietly and published in Germany no obituary. The 80 - year-old widow, Louise born Eberstadt ( born February 25, 1857 in Frankfurt) and daughter Bertha Lenel ( born March 7, 1882 in Freiburg ) was on October 22, 1940 under the Wagner- Bürckel action from Freiburg deported to the camp camp de Gurs in France. The widow died in the camp († November 7, 1940 ). Bertha Lenel survived († August 13, 1973 ).

At Otto Lenel's 50th anniversary, a commemorative plaque was placed on February 7, 1985 to his last residence in the Holbeinstraße 547.982137.84535 in Freiburg.
