Otto Lohse

Otto Lohse (Composer) (full name: Carl Gustav Otto Lohse, born September 21, 1858 in Dresden, † May 5, 1925 in Baden -Baden ) was a German conductor and composer.

Biography

Lohse studied with Hans Richter and Felix Draeseke at Dresden City Conservatory. In 1882 he was in Riga conductor of the Wagner Society and the Imperial Russian Musical Society; seven years later he was the first conductor of the local town theater. In 1893 he was appointed director of the Stadttheater in Hamburg; during his stay in Hamburg, he married the singer Catherine Klafsky. The couple traveled to the U.S. in 1896 to join the Damrosch Opera Company, but returned a year later already returned to Germany. Since that time, Lohse held eminent conductor posts in Strasbourg (1897-1904), Cologne ( 1903-11 ), the Théâtre de la Monnaie ( 1911-12 ), and the Municipal Theatre in Leipzig ( 1912-23 ). He has conducted performances of works by Richard Wagner at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London from 1901 until 1904., The honorary title of Royal Professor Lohse was awarded in 1916. His only opera, The Prince against his will, was premiered in Riga in 1890.
