Otto Nagel

Otto Nagel (born 27 September 1894 in Berlin-Wedding; † July 12, 1967 in Berlin- Biesdorf ) was a painter from Berlin. It was founded in 1970 posthumously honorary citizen of Berlin.

Life

Nagel was born the son of a carpenter and Social Democrats. After elementary school he completed an apprenticeship as a glass painter in a mosaic and stained glass workshop, which, however, he did not graduate, and worked as a Transport Workers later. He was involved early in the working-class youth and joined the SPD in 1912. He first made ​​military service in World War I, but then came for conscientious objection to the penal camp madness near Cologne. 1919 painted nail his first oil paintings and pastels under the influence of August Macke. In 1920 he became a member of the KPD. In 1922 he initiated with Erwin Piscator, the " Artists Help " in the IAH. 1933 Otto Nagel was elected chairman of the National Association of Fine Artists of Germany. The election was a day later canceled by the Nazis. 1945 belonged to Otto Nagel of the founders of the Cultural Alliance. After the forced merger of the SPD and KPD nail became a member of the SED. For the Cultural Alliance, he was appointed as a member of the Consultative Assembly of Brandenburg. He was a member of the 1st and 2nd People's Council of the SBZ, the Provisional People's Chamber and then the People's Chamber of the GDR until 1954. From 1956 to 1962 he served as president of the Academy of Arts of the GDR.

He was married to Valentina nail. Otto Nagel was buried at the Central Cemetery Friedrichsfelde in the artist section of the cemetery to be created by Gerhard Thieme tomb is a historical monument.
