Otto Orseolo

Ottone Orseolo was the 27th Doge of Venice. He reigned from 1009 to 1026.

Family

Ottono belonged to an influential Venetian patrician family that had already submitted a Doge with his father Pietro II Orseolo. At only 12, he was appointed by his father as co- regent, after his older brother Giovanni died of the plague. His brothers Orso and Vitale dressed as Bishop of Torcello and Patriarch of Grado important spiritual offices.

The Orseolo family is extinct in the 15th century.

Life

Ottone was the godson of the German Emperor Otto III .. He married Mary, a daughter of the Hungarian Grand Prince Géza from the dynasty of Árpád since 1011. He was the brother of Stephen I, King of Hungary and Holy Catholic Church, through marriage. The son Ottone, Pietro Orseolo was determined by Stephan his successor as King of Hungary. He ruled Hungary from 1038 to 1041 and, after a three year hiatus, from 1044 to 1046.

The Dogenamt

At the beginning of his reign Ottone was quite successful. He could reach the surrender of cities Loreo and Fossombrone at Venice by the bishop of Adria ( Rovigo in ). Equally successful was his campaign against the pirates in the Adriatic Sea.

At the instigation of Ottone his nearly 30 - year-old brother Orso was appointed Patriarch of Grado and the 20 -year-old brother Vitale Bishop of Torcello, which caused the anger of the influential, venice enemy Patriarch of Aquileia. In addition to a display when Pope Benedict VIII for not granting legal offices, it was Venice harassment by the Patriarch when trading on the Terraferma one. The expulsion from Venice

The Nobili sent Orseolo and his brother, the Patriarch of Grado, to Istria into exile. After his expulsion Pietro Barbolano was Pietro Centranico, chosen also known as the 28th Doge already deposed in 1031 by the followers Orseolos but again. He, too, the beard was shaved and he had to follow his predecessor into exile to Constantinople Opel. New Doge in 1032 again the old Doge Ottone, who should be sent back by his brother Vitale from the Eastern Roman exile. Until his expected return coming reigned as representatives brother Orso, now again Patriarch of Grado. Ottone was but deceased when Vitale arrived in Constantinople Opel.

The Orseolo translated in 1032 Domenico Orseolo as the new Doge, the Arengo, the People's Assembly, however, forced him to leave after only one day as Doge of Venice.
