Otto René Castillo

Otto René Castillo ( born April 25, 1934 in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala, † March 19, 1967 in Guatemala ) was a Guatemalan poet, literary theorist, and guerrilla fighters.

Life

Otto René Castillo was born in 1934 in Quetzaltenango, in northern Guatemala. Since 1954, he was in exile in El Salvador. He first began to study law, but was then able to study on a scholarship from 1959 to 1962 in Leipzig literature. Otto René Castillo was also a filmmaker and was a 1961/62 the jury of the International Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Festival on. In 1966 he returned to Guatemala and became a member of the guerrilla Fuerzas Armadas Revolucionarias.

Castillo is the winner of several Spanish and Latin American literary awards.

On March 19, 1967 he was arrested, tortured and burned alive.

The " Castillo Theatre" in New York City is named after him. In New York, "Otto René Castillo Awards for Political Theatre" will be awarded annually to theater companies and individual artists also since 1998.
