Otto Steinhäusl

Otto Steinhäusl ( born March 10, 1879 in Budweis, Bohemia, † June 20, 1940 in Vienna ) was an Austrian police officer.

Life

Steinhäusl was the son of k.u.k. Lieutenant - auditor. He attended high school in Salzburg and Klagenfurt. From 1898, he studied law at the University of Vienna and joined the academic fraternity Moldavia. 1902/ 03 he served in the infantry regiment 17 as a one-year volunteer. He received his doctorate in 1905 Doctor of Laws. 1906/ 07 he graduated from the judicial year, then he was an intern at the concept of Vienna Police Department. In 1911 he was transferred to Ostrava, where he established the security service on. For his contribution to unmasking of Colonel Redl, he received the Golden Cross of Merit.

He returned to Vienna in 1913 and in 1915 was promoted to police inspector. During World War II he worked in the office of records counterintelligence Austria -Hungary. In 1919 he was promoted to police commissioner and Upper 1921 police superintendent. In 1922 he became provisional head of the Federal Police Department in Salzburg, 1931, he was appointed to the Vienna Police Department, starting in 1932, he was Head of the Security Office. From 1933 he headed the criminal group approval.

Great set German, but he was active not open to the NSDAP. However, he knew of the planned July coup and was arrested after the crackdown in 1934 and sentenced to seven years hard labor on December 20, 1935 due to neglect of duties. In 1936, he was released due to the July agreement.

Steinhäusl was acquired ( 292 773 SS-Nr. ) as Standartenführer after the annexation of Austria in the SS and reached there in July 1938 to the rank of SS Oberfiihrer. One day before the "Anschluss of Austria", he was appointed on the initiative of Kaltenbrunner provisionally to Chief of Police of Vienna, where he had no direct authority over police and Gestapo. On January 18, 1940 he was officially appointed Chief of Police. After a long absence from service, he died on June 20, 1940 of cancer.
