Otto von der Gablentz

Otto Martin of the Gablentz (born 9 October 1930 in Berlin, † 13 July 2007 in Amsterdam ) was a German diplomat.

Life

The son of Otto Heinrich studied by the Gablentz law at the Free University of Berlin and at the Albert -Ludwigs- Universität Freiburg, political science and sociology at the College of Europe, Bruges, at St Antony's College, Oxford University and Harvard University. As a political scientist, he worked on the Berlin question. He was active in the Foreign Service since 1959, from 1961 to 1964 in Australia and 1967 in London. In 1973 he was Head of European political unification and in 1978 moved under Helmut Schmidt to the Chancellery.

In 1981 he became Secretary of State for Foreign and Defence Policy. After the change of government since 1983, he was Ambassador of the Federal Republic of Germany in the Netherlands in 1990 and Ambassador to Israel from 1993 to 1995 Ambassador to Russia. He was since 1993 Honorary Fellow of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, in 1997 an honorary doctorate from the University of Amsterdam and received was from 1996 to 2001 Rector of the College of Europe, Bruges. He lived most recently in Amsterdam, and was buried in Berlin.
