Otto von Porat

Otto von Porat ( born September 29, 1903 in Älmhult, Sweden, † October 14, 1982 in Bærum, Norway) was a Norwegian heavyweight boxer.

Life

Otto von Porat was born in 1903 into an independent, wealthy family on the family's estate in the Swedish Älmhult. From Porat and his three brothers were taught as children by an English tutor so that he learned both English and Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, German and French language fluently. At the young age moved from Porat with his family to Copenhagen, his father built there in the following years a branch of Berlitz language schools. 1914 settled the Von Porat then to Oslo to where his father -actuated considerable maritime investments. Due to the First World War, however, the family fortune was lost rapidly, so that children were forced to look for work. While working as a clerk in a ship with freight forwarder in Oslo Otto von Porat became interested in boxing.

Amateur

His greatest success as an amateur boxer was winning the gold medal in the heavyweight division at the 1924 Olympics in Paris. He defeated while the Australians Charles Jadine, the Italians Ricardo Bertazzolo, Alfredo Porzio from Argentina and in the finals the Danes Søren Petersen.

Professional

1926 Professional From Porat in the USA. He boxed mainly in Minneapolis and Chicago, but had only grown success. In November 1928 and in January 1930 he fought in New York's Madison Square Garden against Paolino Uzcudun and lost each over ten rounds on points. Battling Levinsky he could strike prematurely, against Young Stribling he fought twice: in 1927 he lost on points, 1930, he went in the first round KO. Even the professional fight with his opponent in the final of Paris, Søren Petersen, he was able to win early. On 28 August 1931 he won in Stockholm by technical knockout in the first round against Sweden Harry Persson Scandinavian heavyweight championship. In 1934, he finished his career.
