Otto Wilhelm Hermann von Abich

Otto Wilhelm Hermann von Abich (* December 11, 1806 in Berlin, † July 1, 1886 in Vienna ) was a German mineralogist, geologist and explorer.

Work and work

First scientific work delivered Abich on spinels and other minerals. Later he examined fumaroles, minerals near volcanoes and the structures of volcanoes. In 1842 he was appointed Professor of Mineralogy at the University of Dorpat and undertook 1850-1880 repeatedly trips to Armenia and the Caucasus countries. In 1853 he became a member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences and lived in Vienna since 1877. He had previously visited Tbilisi and studied the geology of the Caucasus.

The mineral Abichit, German for Clinoclase, was named after him.
