Otto Wilhelm Madelung

Otto Wilhelm Madelung ( born May 15, 1846 in Gotha, † July 22, 1926 in Göttingen ) was a German physician. According to him, the Madelung deformity and disease Madelung ( Madelung fat neck) were named.

Biography

Madelung studied medicine from 1865 in Bonn, Berlin and Tübingen, where he 1868/1869 received his doctorate. He practiced at the hospital in Siegburg, in the military hospital in Diez, 1871 as a medical assistant at Charles David Wilhelm Busch ( 1826-1881 ) at the Surgical University Clinic Bonn, where he in 1873 habilitated and from then on under the direction of Georg Eduard beef ( 1836-1909) worked. From 1874 he was in England and the USA. In 1879 he returned to Bonn.

In 1881 he became associate professor and in 1882 full professor and director of the Surgical University Clinic in Rostock and 1894 in Strasbourg successor of George Albert gap.

He was married to Hedwig Madelung, born king. Children from this marriage were the chemist Walter Madelung (1879-1963), the physicist Erwin Madelung (1881-1972) and the aircraft engineer Georg Hans Madelung ( 1889-1972 ).
