Ottokar III of Styria

Ottokar III. (also Otakar III,. * 1125, † December 31, 1164 in Pecs / Pécs ), of the tribe of Traun Gauer, a branch of Otakare, was Margrave of Styria.

He was the son of Leopold I and the Welfin Sophie of Bavaria ( † 1145 ), daughter of Henry the Black and aunt of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa

Since Ottokar was at his father's death only 4 years old, Sophie reigned in tutelage for many years Styria.

By inheritances Ottokar acquired huge areas and offices:

During his reign, Graz becoming the administrative center of Styria: After the death of the owner of the reign of Graz, the high free Aribonen Bernard of Stübing, grandson of the Count Palatine Aribo II, his sons Konrad " Hen" of Feistritzwerke and Adalram 1151 were for alleged treason beheaded. Ottokar founded 1160 Spital am Semmering (in today's Spital am Semmering ), a hospice and a hostel for pilgrims, crusaders or merchants, in 1163 the Vorau 1164 and the first Carthusian monastery in Germany to Seiz at Gonobitz.

Otakar died in 1164 during a crusade in Hungary. His son was the first Duke of Styria.
