Ottoman Tripolitania

The vilayet of Tripolitania (also called Turkish Tripolitania, Ottoman Vilayeti -i Trablus -ı Garb, Turkish Trablusgarp Vilâyeti ) was an administrative sub-unit of the Ottoman Empire. The capital of the province was Tripoli.

It was founded in 1864 after an administrative reform was initiated as part of the Tanzimat period. The vilayet of Tripolitania replaced the Eyalet Tripolitania. The Vilayet of Tripoli was the last direct management Ottoman possession in North Africa.

After the loss-making Italian -Turkish War of 1911 the vilayet of Tripolitania was lost to the Kingdom of Italy. On October 18, 1911 the territory of Italy was militarily occupied and annexed. It was converted into the colony Italian Libya 1934.
