Length measurements in the Ottoman Empire

In the Ottoman Empire was used as the unit of length arsine (Elle ). There were three different arsine: Mimari arsine, çarşı arşını and endaze. A Mimari arsine was 75.8 cm (3/ 4 feet ) long and much longer than the other two. The Mimari arsine, a kind of measuring stick was used mainly for measurements in buildings and landscapes. Therefore, it has received the name " Mimari " (architecture).

The Mimari arsine was mainly made of boxwood, ebony, ivory, iron or steel. Then strokes, were carried out as ordinary rulers, drawn to read measurements. The used in excavations Kadem was 12 parmak long so half a mimari arsine. Two and a half mimari arsine was called the Kulac. It was used in excavations and levies of wells, which one could measure the water level, for example.
