Ottumwa is a city with 24,998 inhabitants ( 2000) in Iowa. It is located 119 km southeast of Des Moines, whose metropolitan area and is part of Wapello County.

History

1851 Ottumwa was destroyed by a flood. 1857 began four miles west of Ottumwa coal mining along the Bear Creek. In 1914, about 100,000 tons were mined in the area of Ottumwa.

Rail transport

In Ottumwa, the former CBQ east-west main line of the BNSF Railway Chicago to Omaha and the former Milwaukee Road - northeast-southwest route from Davenport to Kansas City to the Iowa, Chicago and Eastern Railroad crossing.

The leading south Wabash Railroad branch line to Moulton was shut down as well as the northwest-southeast line of the Chicago, rock Iceland and Pacific Railroad from Des Moines to Keokuk in the 1908er years. Not in operation are also the routes of Ottumwa and Kirksville Railroad and the Chicago Fort Madison and Des Moines Railway.

In Ottumwa is an intermediate stop of Amtrak long distance train California Zephyr (Chicago- San Francisco). The of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, built in 1951 and now used by Amtrak train station is a listed building.
