Ouanaminthe

Ouanaminthe is a Haitian city in Nord -Est directly on the border with the Dominican Republic. The population is including the area at about 100,000 people, including 10,000 alone refugees who came here after the 2010 earthquake. The border river Dajabón River, also called Rio Massacre, runs between Ouanaminthe and Dajabón in the Dominican Republic.

The eponymous arrondissement Ouanaminthe is one of four in the department of Nord-Est with the capital Fort - Liberté.

The border crossing to Dajabón is one of the four major compounds in the Dominican Republic. Twice a week the borders are completely open for the market in Dajabón.

The name of the town goes back to a designation of the indigenous inhabitants, the Tainos, back.

The Dominicans call the city Juana Méndez.
