Ouderkerk aan de Amstel

Ouderkerk aan de Amstel ( Ouderkerk on the Amstel ) is a village in the province of North Holland and partly belongs to the municipality Ouder - Amstel and the western part at the mouth of Bullewijk to Amstelveen.

The village is situated south of Amsterdam and east of Amstelveen, on the northern border of the province of Utrecht. 2005 Ouderkerk had 8228 inhabitants. Of the 269 local companies are engaged in agriculture 60. The largest part of the village lies east of the Amstel in the community Ouder - Amstel. The old village center of Ouderkerk has some attractions. A church from the 18th century, the neo-Gothic Urbanuskirche from the 19th century ( according to a design by Pierre Cuypers ) and the old Portuguese- Jewish cemetery Beth Haim with unique for the Netherlands grave monuments. It is believed that there the castle of the lords van Amstel ( Dutch: Heren van Amstel ) has been, from which the country Amstel and Amsterdam have emerged. Ouderkerk is about 200 years older than Amsterdam. Messrs. van Amstel were vassals of the bishop of Utrecht and later by the Count of Holland. North of Ouderkerk stands at Ouderkerkerdeich the polder mill De Zwaan. To the south lies the polder Hoep Ronde, a popular area for walkers and cyclists, southeast is the recreation area Ouderkerkerplas.
