Definition of Sustainable Development

The concept of sustainable development as defined by the Commission in its report in two ways:

1 " Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. " (See also intergenerational equity )

This definition of intergenerational ecological justice ( intergenerational equity ) is included in all subsequently agreed international environmental agreements.

2 " In essence, sustainable development is a process of change in which the exploitation of resources, the direction of investments, the orientation of technological development and institutional change harmonize and enhance both current and future potential to meet human needs and desires. "

This definition is quoted often. It includes the requirement of a holistic change in behavior, which therefore takes less politically consensual recognition.
