Out Skerries

The Out Skerries are an archipelago in the east of the Shetland Islands about 40 km north- west of Lerwick, the main town of the Shetland Isles.

The two largest and still inhabited islands are Housay with 50 inhabitants and the neighboring island connected by a bridge Bruray live with the port, on the 26 inhabitants. In addition, still beside some smaller and uninhabited islands are also the now uninhabited island Grunay and the Bound Skerry to the Out Skerries.

In the latter is the 1858 built 30 meter high white lighthouse. Since its automation in 1972, living on the island inhabited by three former Leuchtturmwärten no permanent residents more. There is also the easternmost point of the whole of Scotland.

Most of the 76 residents living on the approximately 4 km ² hilly and treeless island group from fishing and agriculture ( especially cattle ).
