Outlook Web App

Outlook Web App ( OWA also briefly mentioned, formerly under the name of Outlook Web Access ) is a technology used by Microsoft for accessing e- mail accounts through an Internet browser.

In the OWA function is similar to the more widely used webmail. About a webmail portal but it accesses usually on private mails, such as on a mail box its provider or a free e-mail provider, so on those mailboxes that could be queried by setting up a mail client also (see POP3). In OWA, however, you can establish a connection to a Microsoft Exchange server by using a Web browser and the HTTP protocol. This technique is often used in business to allow employees to access their corporate mail from outside the office. In the meantime, however, there are numerous providers that offer a so-called " Hosted Exchange " service, which allows individuals the use of Exchange.

To increase the security and the HTTPS protocol can be used or enforced. OWA was first implemented in Exchange 5.0 and has been an integral part of Exchange versions (2000, 2003). Meanwhile obtained when using OWA with a web browser interface that visually differ much more from that of the Microsoft Outlook client. In addition to the mailbox with the folders " Inbox ", " Outbox ", " Sent Items " and "Drafts" are also obtained access to functions such as calendar, task management or the notes used by Outlook.

Starting with Exchange 2003 Outlook Web Access is much more to consider than just a browser-based access to Exchange. Via HTTP and HTTPS are also tunneled other services to bind for example mobile devices, such as cell phones and PDAs, with ActiveSync. This allows these devices via radio access networks, such as GPRS, UMTS or HSDPA.

OWA went up to and including Exchange 2007 on the use of Internet Explorer. In other browsers OWA succeeded in preparing limited and essential functions fell out (eg downloading attachments in ODF format or setting up e -mail forwarding ).

Since Exchange 2010 Outlook Web Access means new Outlook Web App and also has broad support for other browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari and since Exchange 2010 SP2 again the dropped mini- OWA called OMA (Outlook Mobile Access).
