Ouzeri

Ouzeri (Greek ουζέρι (n. sg. ) ) Is a small restaurant where spirits (particularly ouzo ) offered, accompanied by a variety of hot or cold meze in Greece.

One finds ouzeries in almost all cities and villages. In contrast to the traditional Kafenio the dishes are prepared in the store before or. This includes meat and fish dishes, which are not offered in Kafenio. Equivalent terms are tsipouro, Mezedopolio or Ouzopolio.

Cold dishes like

  • Cheese of different varieties like Feta, Kefalo, Graviera
  • Vegetables and salads such as olives, tzatziki, Taramosalata, Greek salad, and
  • Prepared dishes such as dolmades or broad beans out of the oven
  • Marinated, fried and cooked meat and fish dishes such as souvlaki, calamari, mussels, sardines, anchovies, Pastirma.

A plate with a selection of such small dishes can be ordered as Pikilia (Greek ποικιλία ). Ouzo is traditionally sipped slowly (usually with water or ice), together with meze over a period of several hours at midday.

Outside Greece you will find recently - following designations such as cafeteria, Sandwicheria etc. - even the term " Ouzeria " for a Greek restaurant.
