Overbite

The term overbite basically describes the positional relationship of the maxillary anterior teeth to the mandibular anterior teeth. A distinction is made

  • Horizontal overbite ( overjet English ) - positional relationship of the anterior teeth in the horizontal. Measurement is the largest distance between the incisal edges of the central incisors above and below. The information is given in millimeters. Clench their cutting edges, the value is zero. If the maxillary anterior teeth from the lower anterior teeth, the overbite is a positive, the lower front is the front, indicated by a negative number of millimeters. We also speak of an under-bite or undershot mouth.
  • Overbite (English overbite ) - positional relationship of the anterior teeth in the vertical. Measured the distance from the cutting edge to cutting edge. Clench their cutting edges, the value is zero. Get the cutting edge with maximum occlusion no contact, one speaks of a frontal open bite. Covering the maxillary incisors, the mandibular anterior teeth, one speaks of a deep bite. Are the mandibular anterior teeth completely covered, this is called overbite.

If the overbite in both the horizontal as in the vertical at zero, it is called a header or tête- a- tête - bite.

Eugnathes a (normal ) set of teeth has a horizontal overbite 2-3 mm and a vertical 1-2 mm. The maxillary anterior teeth are so little in front of the mandibular anterior teeth and cover them by 1 to 2 mm. The term overbite is colloquially often equated with an enlarged horizontal overbite. Strictly speaking this is not correct: overbite is not a diagnosis but merely a measure that can be part of a diagnosis. Also can not always rule out the type and size of the overbite on the Angle class of the dentition. However, there is a certain correlation between the class II and an enlarged horizontal overbite, and Class III and a negative horizontal overbite. Whether and when an enlarged overbite must be treated depends on a variety of other factors. As a guideline for the horizontal overbite results according to IOTN a moderate need for treatment ≥ 6 mm and a clear need for treatment at ≥ 9 mm.
