Overnet

Overnet (formerly Flex ) was a decentralized peer-to -peer file sharing platform. Originally planned as the successor to eDonkey2000 she came out without a server in contrast to this. Basis for serverless understanding of the clients was the Kademlia protocol, by which built up the eMule Kad clients via a decentralized, but incompatible to Overnet network.

Server-based exchange platforms such as eDonkey2000, Napster, Audiogalaxy or Soulseek store information on one or more central servers. As soon as the servers go offline (for whatever reason), the network is suddenly inoperative or at least paralyzed in its speed, the participants are therefore completely dependent. This problem is counteracted by the server-less method.

The integration of the Overnet in the eDonkey2000 client in early 2003 had ensured that the file sharing of eDonkey2000 user was disturbing heavier. With the release of version 1.0 of the eDonkey client, there was no official Overnet client more. Although the possibility of using the server-based eDonkey network by eDonkey2000 continued to exist, but had to be activated as an option.

The outdated MD4 algorithm to create However, used as Overnet eDonkey checksums of files to be exchanged. The algorithm is not collision-resistant and therefore uncertain; with little computational effort so it was possible to distribute fake chunks, without the client was able to recognize this.

On 12 September 2006, the distribution of the eDonkey client was stopped and shut down the websites of MetaMachine (including www.edonkey2000.com and www.overnet.com ). As a result, gradually broke Overnet together.
