Ovifat

Ovifat (German: Fischvenn ) is a district of the municipality Weismes (French officially Malmedy ) in eastern Belgium, Liège Province, with a predominantly French-speaking population, but with language facilities for the minority of the German -speaking population. Weismes forms with the community the District of Malmedy Malmedy.

In the early Middle Ages Ovifat was with Montreal, Xhoffraix and Longfaye to the emerging communities on the southern slope of the Vennplateaus that were colonized by Malmedy from the right Warcheufer. These communities had in Vennhinterland enough land for grazing and haying. The places were on the streets between Hokai and Via Mansuerisca.

The center of Ovifat today is the church dedicated to St. Remacle 1935. First mentioned, and built in its present form in 1898, is the chapel of Cheneux who is on the road to the castle Reinhard stone. 1354 started to build the castle, which was destroyed by Napoleon's troops revolution. Many residents work in the surrounding villages, but also commute to Luxembourg and Germany. The dairy industry has shrunk down to a mode with a correspondingly large herd. The last sawmill in Ovifat specializes in the construction of wooden houses in the low energy sector. With the castle, the lake of Robertsville, a plant for alpine skiing - now also with summer use by Kart - and many hiking and cycling trails, the place is known for a less touristy. About hiking trails to reach the Botrange Nature Centre and Belgium the highest point, the Signal de Botrange.

Typical of Ovifat and other places on the High Fens are the Stone houses and the high beech hedges as windbreaks. The nickname for the inhabitants is baras (Aries).
